Legal Metrology: OIML’s 70th Anniversary
An Anniversary to Celebrate
October 12th marks the anniversary of the founding of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), established in 1955. This intergovernmental organization, which brings together over 60 member states, has a fundamental mission: to harmonize the regulations and metrological controls of measuring instruments used in commerce, industry, and consumer protection. In a globalized world, the certainty that a liter measured in Italy corresponds exactly to a liter in Japan is not a technical detail, but a cornerstone of international trade and consumer protection. Celebrating this anniversary means recognizing the value of trust in measurements and helps us:
- Raise awareness of the importance of accurate and reliable measurements.
Promote the adoption of common metrological standards among countries.
Highlight how legal metrology protects consumers, supports fair trade, and contributes to sustainable development.
Metrology in Everyday Life
Legal metrology accompanies every moment of our day. When we buy fruit at the market, the scales must be checked periodically to ensure fair transactions. When we refuel, dispensers are inspected to ensure they dispense the exact amount indicated. The electricity, gas, and water meters in our homes are subjected to metrological checks to ensure we pay exactly for what we consume.
In the healthcare sector, for example, precision is a matter of life and death: from blood pressure monitors to medication dosing instruments, every measurement must meet rigorous standards. An error of a few milliliters or a few degrees can have dramatic consequences.

Industry and Commerce: Where Precision Is Value
In the industrial sector, legal metrology is equally critical. In pharmaceutical production weighing, every gram of active ingredient must be measured with absolute precision. In food weighing, the weight of packaged products is subject to strict tolerances to prevent commercial fraud.
International trade relies entirely on trust in measurements. When a cargo ship transports thousands of tons of grain, the difference between an accurate and an approximate measurement can translate into millions of euros. In the precious metals weighing sector, scales must guarantee milligram-level accuracy.
Legal metrology is also crucial for environmental protection: air pollutant detectors and instruments for monitoring industrial emissions must provide reliable data. In the field of road safety, breathalyzers and speed detection devices must be regularly calibrated to ensure fair and effective controls.
An invisible yet indispensable system
The OIML anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on how much our society depends on an accurate and reliable measurement system. Legal metrology is one of those invisible mechanisms that make modern civilization function: we don’t notice when it’s working, but its absence would create chaos.
In an age where data pervades every aspect of our existence, the OIML’s work represents a bulwark against arbitrariness and fraud, ensuring fairness, security, and progress.
