In the vast panorama of technical-scientific professions, the metrologist plays a crucial but often little-known role. This professional is the guarantor of precision in measurements: through his skills, he ensures that measurements are reliable, repeatable and compliant with international standards, playing a key role in numerous sectors, from industry to scientific research.

Who is the Metrologist?

The metrologist is a measurement expert, specializing in the theory and practice of metrology, the science of measurement. His training ranges from the fundamentals of mathematics and physics that support the concept of measurement, to the practical application of the tools and techniques necessary to obtain precise and accurate results. The metrologist’s activities take place within a broad and varied regulatory framework.

The requirements relating to the professional activity of the Metrology Technician have been defined by the Metrology Commission together with the CEI – Italian Electrotechnical Committee within the UNI CEI 11902.

These requirements are specified starting from the specific tasks and activities and the identification of the related contents, in terms of knowledge and skills, also in order to clearly identify the level of autonomy and responsibility, in line with the National Qualifications Framework. They are expressed in such a way as to facilitate and contribute to making the conformity assessment processes as homogeneous and transparent as possible.

How a Metrology Technician works

The Metrologist Technician develops and carries out measurement processes, operating for example in testing and calibration laboratories, metrological laboratories, field measurement installations (on-site), mobile measurement stations, etc.

He is able to take a proactive role in his work, relating to other figures in the context in which he operates, as appropriate. The acquisition, maintenance and updating of the skills necessary for this professional activity are not subordinate to a specific training course. The professional is in any case required to follow independent or guided continuous professional development courses.

The tasks and related specific activities of the Metrology Technician can be conceptually organized in an iterative PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) process, referring both to a new measurement process and to an existing process.

Briefly, four phases can be distinguished, let’s see them below:

1. Planning (Plan): analysis of the current situation, identification of what must be done to achieve the established objectives, and planning of the actions to be carried out with a view to continuous improvement;
2. Execution (Do): implementation of previously identified plans and actions;
3. Analysis of results (Check): assessment of the adequacy of the results obtained with respect to the established objectives and identification of solutions for the identified problems;
4. Implementation of solutions (Act): implementation of the identified solutions, continuing to monitor the processes.

Responsibility

The metrologist’s main responsibility is to ensure that measurements are accurate and reproducible.

This involves calibrating and calibrating measuring instruments, developing and implementing standardized procedures for measurements, as well as managing the data obtained from the measurements themselves. Furthermore, the metrologist may be involved in the development and research of new measurement technologies and methodologies, in order to continuously improve the accuracy and reliability of measurement processes.

In a world where the precision and reliability of measurements are essential for scientific, technological and economic progress, the role of the metrologist is more important than ever. As guarantors of measurement precision, metrologists play a key role in ensuring quality, reliability and safety in industrial, scientific and technological processes.
